“Self-Worth” by Alexis Bates

2 AM birds sing a love song
for the drunkard stumbling home –
not by the moon’s light,
but by the faded yellow
emanating from
flickering street lamps.

This man is as worthy
of beautiful things
as the early risers.
As it happens,

no one deserves
the morning bird’s song
more. Life has been
too hard
on that fragile heart
that he wishes would stop
singing.

Bio: Alexis Bates, 18, is an upstart poet living in Baltimore, MD. Her poems force us to reflect on how we relate to topics such as self-perception, broken hearts, and mental illness.
